QUALMI-697: ADVANCED FIRE FIGHTING RENEWAL/REFRESHER STCW CODE 2011 EDITION APPROVED!

COURSE LENGTH: 16 HOURS (2 DAYS)

Course Description:

This 16 hour (two-day) course of instruction is designed to provide to the student a training experience that combines formal classroom instruction with practical exercises and hands-on shipboard fire fighting procedures and tactics practical training and assessment. The Manila Amendments to the STCW Code make it mandatory for certain parts of Advanced Fire Fighting to be refreshed ashore even for mariners that have sufficient sea time to renew their credential.  Seafarers previously qualified in accordance with Section A-VI/3, paragraph 4 of the STCW Code in advanced fire fighting who shall be required, every five years, to provide evidence in accordance with paragraph 5 of Section A-VI/3 of the STCW Code 2011 Edition.

Any applicant who completes this course will satisfy: The Advanced Fire Fighting training requirements of Section A-VI/3, paragraph 5 and Table A-VI/3 of the STCW Code, as amended, provided that have previously met the requirements of Section A-VI/3, paragraph 4 of the STCW Code, as amended. This course is designed to ensure the seafarer maintains the required standard of competence of Table A-VI/3, in the following areas:

  • Control fire-fighting operations aboard ships;
  • Fire-fighting procedures at sea and in port, with particular emphasis on organization, tactics and command;
  • Communication and coordination during fire-fighting operations;
  • Ventilation control, including smoke extraction;
  • Control of fuel and electrical systems;
  • Fire-fighting process hazards (dry distillation, chemical reactions, boiler uptake, fires);
  • Fire precautions and hazards associated with the storage and handling of materials;
  • Management and control of injured persons; and
  • Procedures for coordination with shore-based fire fighters.

Examination, Practical Evaluation and Assessment: Written examination – 20 questions. Student must respond with 70% correct answers to obtain a satisfactory score.
